Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers from people who've actually done it.

Schools

How far in advance should I apply?
12-18 months for Doha College, DESS, ASD, and Brighton College. 6-12 months for most others. Apply before you have your QID — schools are relaxed about QID delays.

Do I need my QID before applying?
No. Schools accept applications without QID. You'll need it for final enrolment, but the application process starts much earlier.

What's included in school fees?
Usually tuition, basic books, and some activities. Uniforms, transport, trips, and extra-curriculars are extra. Budget 5,000-10,000 QAR/year on top of headline fees.

Housing

What if housing isn't in my package?
Budget 12,000-18,000 QAR/month for a decent 2-3 bedroom in a family compound. This is the #1 hidden cost for expats whose employers no longer include housing.

What's DEWA?
Electricity and water. Budget 500-1,200 QAR/month depending on apartment size and season. Summer AC usage spikes costs significantly.

Documents

What needs attesting?
Degree certificates, marriage certificates, birth certificates, school reports, and sometimes previous employment references. Public sector roles require the most extensive attestation.

How long does attestation take?
4-8 weeks typically. Start before you move. Foreign ministry attestation is required for school enrolment.

Life in Qatar

Do I need a car?
Yes. Public transport exists but won't cover your daily life. Uber works but gets expensive. Most families lease (2,500-4,000 QAR/month) or buy second-hand.

Is Qatar safe?
Extremely. One of the safest countries in the world. But driving standards are... variable. Defensive driving is essential.

How hot does it get?
45-50°C in July-August. Life moves indoors. The heat is genuinely oppressive — factor it into your mental preparation.

Money

Is salary really tax-free?
Yes — no income tax in Qatar. But "tax-free" doesn't mean "cost-free". Factor in housing, schooling, transport, and the hidden costs we outline in our hidden costs breakdown.

Can I open a bank account before arriving?
No. You need your QID and employment letter. QNB and HSBC are popular with British expats. Bring proof of address from the UK.
