Compound living is the default for most expat families in Doha. You get security, community, pools, gyms — and often, your housing allowance covers it. Here's what's actually available and what it costs when housing isn't in your package.

What British Families Say
"Al Waab City is where everyone ends up. It's not the fanciest, but your kids will have friends within a week. The pool is the social hub."
"The Pearl looks incredible but the traffic getting to school at 7am is brutal. Factor in an extra 20 minutes each way."
"Beverly Hills villas are huge — but the garden maintenance is on you. If you're not getting a housing allowance, the rent will hurt."
Key Considerations
- Housing allowance — Many employers cover 10,000-15,000 QAR. Check what's included (DEWA? Internet?)
- School proximity — Doha College and DESS are in Al Waab. Living nearby saves 30 min/day.
- Traffic patterns — West Bay to Al Waab at 7am = 25-35 minutes. The Pearl to anywhere = +15 minutes.
- DEWA (electricity/water) — Budget 500-1,200 QAR/month. Summer AC costs are real.
- Compound fees — Some charge separate service fees (500-1,000 QAR/month). Ask before signing.
- Lease terms — Typically 12-month contracts. Break clauses are rare. Negotiate upfront.
