Converting Your UK Driving Licence in Qatar: The 2026 Step-by-Step Guide

Good news for British drivers in Qatar: the UK is on Qatar's list of countries whose licence holders can convert to a Qatari licence without sitting a driving test. No theory exam, no practical test, no driving school. Just an eye test, the right documents, and a trip to the Traffic Department.

The process sounds simple — and it basically is — but there are enough bureaucratic specific requirements that getting one step wrong can mean a wasted morning. Here's exactly what to do.

First: What You Can Drive on Before Your Qatari Licence Is Ready

Understanding your options during the transition period matters, especially since getting your QID (which you need to convert your licence) can take several weeks.

Week 1: Your UK Licence

On a UK driving licence, you can legally drive in Qatar for seven days from your date of entry. This is enough time to sort temporary accommodation and get your bearings, but not enough for the full licence conversion process.

Up to 6 months: International Driving Permit

If you obtained an International Driving Permit (IDP) before leaving the UK — available from the Post Office, AA, or RAC for around £5.50 — you can use it alongside your UK licence for up to six months from your arrival date. This covers the time it typically takes to get your QID sorted and then convert your licence.

The IDP is genuinely worth getting before you leave the UK. Once you're in Qatar, you cannot easily obtain one.

Temporary Qatari Licence

If you don't have an IDP and your seven days expire before your QID is ready, you can apply for a Temporary Licence at the Traffic Department (Madinat Khalifa location). You'll need:

• Original UK licence
• Original passport and copies
• Three passport-sized photos
• Fee: QAR 160 (QAR 10 for the card, QAR 150 for the application)
• An eye test on-site

Temporary licences are valid for three months and are renewable. Valid as a stopgap, but don't dawdle on the permanent conversion.

The Conversion Process: Step by Step

You cannot convert your UK licence until you have your Qatar ID (QID). This is non-negotiable. The conversion process is tied entirely to your QID number.

Step 1: Get Your QID First

Step 2: Complete an Eye Test

The eye test is mandatory and straightforward — it's a basic vision test, not a full optician examination. You can do it at:

• Any driving school in Qatar (listed at the Traffic Department)
• Some optical centres
• The Traffic Department itself has facilities

What you need: Your original QID

What to bring: Your glasses or contact lenses if you normally wear them for driving — and if you wear glasses, your photos must show you wearing them.

The eye test result is uploaded to the MOI system. When you attend the Traffic Department, the officer will check the system for your test results. Don't leave the testing centre without confirming the result has been submitted digitally.

Step 3: Get Your No Objection Certificate (NOC)

You need a No Objection Certificate from your sponsor (your employer, or in some cases your spouse if family-sponsored). This confirms your employer has no objection to you holding a Qatari driving licence.

The easiest way to get this since March 2026 is through the Metrash app (MOI's updated app — the old Metrash2 has been replaced). Your sponsor logs in, selects Traffic > Licence Service > Licence NOC, and completes the digital request. The NOC is issued as a document in the app. No physical letter needed if done digitally.

If your employer does it as a typed letter, it needs to be in Arabic and on company letterhead. Many companies have a standard template — ask HR.

Step 4: Prepare Your Documents

Have all of the following ready before attending the Traffic Department:

• Traffic Department Headquarters, Gharafa — newer, often faster

Hours vary, but generally: 7:00am–12:30pm and 1:00pm–6:30pm, except Fridays.

The Gharafa headquarters tends to move faster than Madinat Khalifa. If it's your first time and you want to get it done in one visit, go to Gharafa. Go early — the queues build after 9am.

What Your Qatari Driving Licence Looks Like

It's a small credit-card-sized laminated card with your photo, name, QID number, and licence categories. Keep a photocopy, but the original needs to be on you when driving. The Metrash app also allows you to store a digital version — useful as backup, but always carry the physical card.

No. You need a full driving licence to convert. A provisional licence is not eligible.

Standard UK DVLA-issued licences are accepted. If there's any unusual feature (very old paper format, address abroad), contact the Traffic Department in advance.

Once your licence is sorted, you'll want a car. Doha is not a walkable city — most neighbourhoods require a vehicle for daily life.

A few notes on driving in Doha:

• Traffic moves fast on the expressways — the speed limit on many highways is 120km/h
• Roundabout etiquette differs from the UK (vehicles already on the roundabout don't always have right of way — check local rules)
• Parking in malls is free and extensive
• Petrol is extremely cheap — roughly QAR 1.90–2.00 per litre (35–40p in GBP terms)
